Starting June 30, 2025, B.C.’s new Commercial Liens Act makes it easier and more consistent for service providers to secure payment for their work. Whether you fix, store, move, tow, or salvage goods, the rules are getting simpler, fairer, and more flexible.

Right now, different industries follow different lien laws, which can be confusing and costly. The new Act rolls everything into one clear set of rules and connects it with B.C.’s Personal Property Security Act (PPSA).

• No Possession? No Problem: You can now enforce a lien even if you don’t have the goods in your possession.
• Automatic Liens: Your lien rights kick in as soon as you start the work, no matter where the goods are.
• More Goods Covered: Liens now apply to all types of goods, not just specific vehicles or equipment.
• Easier Sales Process: Selling goods to recover unpaid bills will follow the same, simpler process for everyone.
• Expanded Rights for Carriers: All transport providers can claim liens, and the amount secured can include agreed or market rates.
